ART. 1. The Commanders of all ships and vessels belonging to the THIRTEEN UNITED COLONIES, are strictly required to shew in themselves a good example of honor and virtue to their officers and men, and to be very vigilant in inspecting the behaviour of all such as are under them, and to discountenance and suppress all dissolute, immoral and disorderly practices; and also, such as are contrary.   The only hope to stop a full-fledged war is with three Naval Academy Midshipmen. The question is, can they act in time? Rules of Engagement by David Bruns and J. R. Olson is a well-written, ripped-from-the-headlines novel. While some of the technology in the novel is still in the future, much of what the author refers to is quite real.

US Military Rules of Engagement and the Iraq WarAn informed reader sent in what I found to be a fascinating reply to my comment that I thought the U.S. military's rules of engagement were wrong for a clannish society such as Iraq. My point was that as I understood it, the US rules of engagement favor meeting any violent challenge with massive force, whereas the British are more restrained.

"Rules of Engagement" is a first-rate techno-thriller. Written in the same great style of Tom Clancy's "Hunt for Red October" and "Red Storm Rising", this book is packed with action throughout. The characters leap off the page, and their struggles and tension in dealing with their problems is evident throughout.

I highly recommend this great book/5(63). In the 18th and 19th centuries, the United States based its rules of engagement at sea on the American understanding of the law of nations. The law of nations, or international law, as it relates to the sea had its roots in the writings of several 16th- and 17th-century theorists, beginning with the Dutch writer Hugo Grotius, who rejected the claim of the Spanish to dominion over the seas.

The authors are both former naval officers and their firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of international politics & armed forces shows in Rules of Engagement. This is what I call a ‘potato chip book’, you can’t just read one chapter/5.
